Family waterfronts fall as advocates rally to save bigger ones

After a surge of storms this past season, a long time local fisherman family and one of the last working waterfronts in the area, the Backman's dock was destroyed and thrown all over the marsh. In an effort to help rebuild the dock and restore the Backman's facilities, Charleston Oyster Farm organized a debris clean up for the family and started a GoFundMe (Donate Now!) to raise money for the dock repairs. The Backman's, now close friends of ours, are one of the original working waterfront families, but with limited time and resources to repair all the storm damage, their family business has been fading. As part of our mission, and hopefully Charleston's, we believe restoring the working waterfronts of Charleston is vital to our local seafood industry, the environment, and the economy.
